Abstract:
Simpler the Better:
A new approach for implant restorations
This approach is new in the same fashion as implants are new. Implants have always been possible. We are finding out only now by serendipity, in what situations lie the best odds epidemiologically. The prosthesis design is a very critical factor. That is simply because implant dentistry is prosthesis driven. The restorative and prosthetic dentists need to come forward and accept the dominant role that they need to perform.
Equitable stress distribution is the holy grail of prosthetic design. In order to aviod high peak stresses the structure must be properly engineered. Modern engineers commonly use a mathematical system called the finite element method (FEM) to predict stress distributions in such critical situations as superhighway bridges, the tallest buildings and the highest and fastest traveling air- and spacecraft. It has also been applied to the human jaws and to prosthetic designs using implants and natural teeth.
Dr. Simon will discuss and illustrate the restorative methods he employs to deliver dental restorations supported by implants. Cemented crown and bridge restorative designs will be highlighted along with the rationale for simple designs.
